The chances are that when it was fresh from the base up that it was a much better spike than the other one. There has been a lot of contro- versy about this. This is my opinion. DO NOT BE HASTY in judging a variety from one year's trial. Do not judge a variety by the bloom from small bulbs. Small bulbs will often give good results at a low cost per bulb but remember that descriptions are taken from results obtained by growing large bulbs under good conditions. Do not judge a variety entirely from one bulb or one years trial. In many, or in fact most varieties, an occasional bulb will produce poor spikes, short spikes or florets badly placed or something else the matter with it. Every variety is a law unto itself. Some varieties will produce more poor spikes than others. Then some varieties seem to have to be acclimated before doing well in a certain locality. SIZE OF BULBS. If you want the very best bulbs to be had, that is bulbs that should produce the best blooming flower, you should buy No. 1. That is if they are young bulbs not more than two years old from bulblets. No. 2 will often give very nearly as good results and if you still want first class bloom but if money is limited get No. 3. Personally I like No. 3. People often ask me how small bulbs will bloom. In most varieties even No. 6 will bloom. No. 5 will give very creditable bloom and No. 4 very good flowers. But in these small sizes you can't depend upon 100% of them blooming. If a
