17th century chemistry lecture. Artwork showing local people attending a chemistry lecture by the French chemist Nicolas Lemery (1645-1715). Lemery was was one of the first people to develop theories on acid-base chemistry. He did not believe in theoretical speculation and held many lectures such as this to demonstrate chemical principles. Scenes like this were typical of his lectures where everyday people filled the room to see his demonstrations.
