Botulinum type B neurotoxin. Molecular model of the Botulinum type B neurotoxin complexed with its receptor. This powerful toxin, produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, enters nerve cells and prevents release of neurotransmitters. This destroys communication pathways between nerve cells and leads to muscle paralysis, respiratory failure and death. This type B toxin has been marketed under the trade names Neurobloc (EU) and Myobloc (US) to treat cervical dystonia, a movement disorder affecting the neck muscles.
