The character of the space availableoften determines which style must be used, as the upright ma-chine, while it requires a high studded room, takes up muchless floor space than the horizontal machine. Aside fromthis consideration it is very largely a matter of mdividualpreference which form is used, although the horizontal formis slightly more efficient. The horizontal form also has theadvantage that it can be more easily increased in capacitythan the upright form as any number of cylinders from oneup can be added at any time and still have the goods threadup properly. The upright machine is usually built with one,two or more columns, each column consisting of ten cylinders,although it is frequently built with eight cylinders in eachcolumn.
