A memorial to the heroine Mary Anne Rogers stewardess of the Stella who sacrificed herself after a shipwreck to save others

A memorial to Mary Anne Rogers stewardess of The Stella who amid the terror and confusion of shipwreck on 30th March 1899 aided all the women under her charge to quit the ship safely. She gave her own lifebelt to another who was unprotectected and refused to get into the heavily laden lifeboat in case she endangered the others and was seen a few moments later as the Stella went down with her arms upraised praying Lord Have Me. She sank in the waters with the sinking ship. The design is by Herbert Bryans.
