The Cambrian quartzite screes on the upper slopes of Arkle, which overlay the much older Lewisian gneiss, give this remote Sutherland mountain its distinctively white, seemingly snow-dusted appearance. (The adjoining mountain Foinaven shares the same characteristics.) Loch Stack in the foreground, which is part of the Reay Forest Estate owned by the Duke of Westminster, is renowned for its salmon, sea trout and trout fishing, usually from a boat, accompanied by a ghillie.
