Lunar eclipse. Historical diagram from Eclipsis Lunaris, published by Henrico Klausing (1675-1745) in 1719, showing the total lunar eclipse of 9th September 1718. The diagram shows the path of the Moon (small shaded circle) relative to the umbral (partial) and penumbral (full) shadows of the Earth. The inner, darker circle is the umbra and the outer, lighter circle the penumbra. The path of the Earth's orbit is shown (diagonal line). Moon symbols are plotted at three principal phases of the eclipse to show its position relative to the umbral and penumbral shadows. See image V700/0505 for the title page of Eclipsis Lunaris.
