Introduction Long-term mark and recapture studies of natural populations have become important in recent decades due to their great power in demonstrating population parameters. These investigations permit the testing of hypotheses concerning the mechanisms governing population parameters. The ability to follow particular individuals through time reveals the scale of behavioral heterogeneity within the local population. It also allows the examination of these population parameters as a function of age or changing social status. This approach has already gained firm position in the population studies of birds and mammals, but it has only recently been broadly employed in reptile studies. © 1995 by Asiatic Herpetological Research.
