COLONEL JOSEPH GREENE TILFORD, (retired). Colonel Joseph Greene Tilford, son of ColonelAlexander Tilford, a veteran of the War of 1812, wasborn in Georgetown, Kentucky, November 26, graduated at West Point, July 1, 185 1 ; was assignedto the mounted rifles, and ordered to Carlisle served there until the fall of 1853, then joined hisregiment in Texas, doing duty against the hostile Co-manche and Kiowa Indians, until 1856, when his regimentwas ordered to New Mexico to operate against the Nava-joes and Apaches. In 1858, with a detachment of his regiment, he ac-companied Captain Marcy with a supply train to Utah;entered Salt Lake City with General Albeit S. Johnstonsarmy, remained in Utah a few weeks, then returned toNew Mexico, where he engaged in active warfare forthree years against the Navajoes and Apaches. Theopening of the Civil War found him atFort Fauntleroy,New Mexico, where he bade
