. Railway master mechanic [microform] . x-position, at St. Louis, the Geological Survey began a com-prehensive study on a practical scale of the utilization of coal, J. A. Holmes being placed in chargi of the work The •investigations are still in progress at Pittsburg, Pa., and lhave resulted in making authentic information of greal practical value available to the publi< as well a- to the governincut departments. A Handy Vise hi the illustrations herewith, is shown i which adapts itself to a great many positions and classes of work. It isdesigned by means of short radii joint- to ad like the humanhand in grasping objects. When the is in position onthe side of a work bench, it- top is flush with the tothe bench and it thus is not an obstruction. By trippinga trigger it can be swung in the arc-, of circles, tin- pi;of which are verticle and at right angles. This can also bedone in a horizontal plane, and at any point the vise canbe locked iirmly in position. The device, which is called the Universal Pattern 5 %A a ■ i Universal Vise in Two Positions. Vise. is made of iron and steel, and weighs about 7> main jaws are 8x16 in., smoothly ground and movingnormally parallel. The ends are squared, and the planedscrew sleeve runs through the center so that the operatorcan place his work on either side, making it a right or lefthanded vise. Of the main jaws, the moving one is fittedwith a device which throws the entire jaw out of parallel topermit the gripping of tapered work. This vise is made by the G. M. Yost Mfg. of Mead-ville, Pa. Severe Test of Motive Power on RatonMountain* Late in the year 1878 the Santa Fe line was being pushedsouth from La Junta, Colo. The first objective point was LasVegas, N. M., and from there, lines were to be projected south-ward to the Rio Grande and westward toward the coast. Themountain grades that interposed between La Junta and LasVegas at once loomed up as the first great obstacle to be over-come by t
