Our subjectsfather continued in the mercantile business until1875, when he sold out, and about that time hewas elected Justice of the Peace, lie died Octo-ber 26, 1885. Ior four j-ears he was Burgess Borough. lie took part in thcengage-mfnt at Gettysburg during the Civil War. Polit-ically he was a Republican, and in religious mat-ters was a member of the Lutheran Church. Our subjects mother, whose maiden name wasSarah E. BickeJ, was a daughter of Samuel Bickel,a merchant. The great-grandfather, .John , was in the War of 1812 and was appointedthe first Postmaster at Jonestown, holding theoffice for sixty years. After his death, wliicli oc-curred at that place in 1858, his son Samuel him,serving until 1861. He died in 1872,aged sixty-three yeai-s. Our subjects mother stillresides at the old homestead.
