In company with many others of our Regiment, I attended a solemnburial service on Wednesday, Oct. 16th, which took place at a small familyburial ground within our camp lines, where a deceased member of the 3dMaine Regiment was interred. The departed comrade was given full mihtaryhonor. The band of his Regiment played a dirge with muffled drums, slowtime, and the firing squad marched with arms reversed. The coffin wasborne upon the shoulders of four privates and covered with the Stars andStripes. The Chaplain officiated at the grave, and the solemn PleyelsHymn was performed by the^^band as the body was lowered into the then came the volleys which ended the HOLLY LEAF. We practiced loadingand firing by command and at will. We enjoyed it because it was anexciting novelty, and in fact we enjoyed all forms of drilling then, becausethe weather was perfectly adapted to the severity of regimental use of balloons for reconnoitering began at about this time. They wereinflated and dispatched from Arlington Heights, and they frequently passedover our camp on their journey towards the enemy, but in our subsequentcampaigns the balloons were captive.
