The Italian town of Pompeii, near Naples in Italy, was destroyed by the volcanic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79. In excavations in the 1800s, many wall paintings were uncovered, including many landscape scenes. This interpretation of one of those scenes was drawn by 19th-century art historian Charles Reber.
