The third ventricle,like the fourth, isroofed over by theepithelial lining ofthe central cerebro-spinal cavities. Thisepithelial covering isnot fi-ee but coversthe under surface ofthe median portion of an expansion of pia mater named the velum. THALAMENCEPHALOK 323 mferpositum, which overHes the third ventricle as well as the largerpart of the optic thalami. The epithelium follows all the inequalitiesof two fringed vascular tracts (choroid plexuses) which project down-Avard from the membrane ; and, therefore, becomes torn away whenthe pia mater is removed. At the white stria on either side it iscontinuous with the epithelium covering the lateral wall.
