A popular chemistry; . ocean and the rock. Results if the Air were Undiluted 0. —The fireelement would run riot every-where. Metal lampswould burn with the oil they contain. Our stoveswould blaze with a shower of sparks. A fire oncekindled would spread with ungovernable velocity, and a universal conflagration would quickly wrapthe world in flame. Fig. OZONE. Ozone is an allotropic form of 0—i. e., a form inwhich the element itself is so changed as to havenew properties. Source.—It is always perceived during the work-ing of an electric machine, and is then called theelectric smell. It is also saidto have been noticed dur-ing thunder-showers, and isformed by evaporation andvarious processes of combus-tion. Preparation. — Place afreshly scraped stick of phos-phorus in a jar containing alittle water, so that it shallbe partly covered with thewater. It will slowly oxidize, and the peculiar odor of ozone will soon be perceived in the jar. It may also be testedby a paper wet with a mixture of starch and po-. 24 INORGANIC CHEMISTRY. tassium iodide (KI). The ozone sets free the iodine, which unites with the starch, forming blue iodideof starch.* At a temperature above that of boilingwater, the ozone will turn back into 0. Properties. — Ozone is still more corrosive thanoxygen. It tarnishes mercury, which oxygen doesnot attack at ordinary temperatures; it bleachespowerfully, and it is a rapid disinfectant. A pieceof tainted meat plunged into a jar of it is instantlydeodorized, and it is probable that, even in minutequantities, this gas exercises a powerful influence inpurifying the atmosphere. Ozone is condensed molecule consists of three atoms of 0 instead oftwo, as in ordinary oxygen. The change of oxygeninto ozone may be thus represented:302 = 203 Oxygen Ozone. WEIGHING AND MEASURING GASES. It is so much easier to measure the volume of agas than it is to weigh it, that in practice the gasobtained by any reaction is usually measured andits amount or weight
