Radio image of quasar 3C 179, at a wavelength of 18cm. The quasar is some 7000 million light-years away. Its central core (the small white spot at centre) has ejected \jets\" of electrons to form the \"clouds\" of radio emission on either side. The picture was made by combining 18cm data from the VLA radio telescope in New Mexico & the MERLIN network of radio telescopes operated by Jodrell Bank in England. The VLA's beam (1. 2 arcseconds) provides the broad outlines, MERLIN's finer beam (0. 3 arcseconds) the details. The colours represent intensity of 18cm radio emission from the quasar, ranging from white for the most intense to dark blue for the least intense."
