Captioned: "Sematic god Aphlad, honored on a Hellenistic relief from Dura-Europos (Syria), on the Euphrates in Mesopotamia. The worship of indigenous gods continued in many localities." Ancient Semitic religion encompasses the polytheistic religions of the Semitic speaking peoples of the ancient Near East and Northeast Africa. Its origins are intertwined with Mesopotamian mythology. These traditions, and their pantheons, fall into regional categories: Canaanite religions of the Levant, Assyro-Babylonian religion influenced by Sumerian tradition, and Pre-Islamic Arabian polytheism. There is also a possible transition of Semitic polytheism into Abrahamic monotheism, by way of the god El, a word for "god" in Hebrew and cognate to Islam's Allah. Hellenistic art is the art of the Hellenistic period dating from the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC to the emergence of ancient Rome as signified by the Battle of Actium in 31 BC and the subsequent conquest of Ptolemaic Egypt in 30 BC.
