London's City Road may not be the first place you think of when you hear the phrase "luxury living", but this resolutely unglamorous thoroughfare looks set for a much-needed facelift with the arrival of the brave new Canaletto tower, the first of a cluster of waterside state-of-the-art residential skyscrapers currently under construction next to City Road Basin, part of the Regent's Canal. The 31-storey development designed by Amsterdam-based architecture firm UNStudio, launched the first phase of apartments on 10 October 2013, of the 191 available over 50 per cent have already sold. Canaletto is releasing apartments on its 16th and 17th floor months ahead of schedule in order to meet demand. They are on sale with Jones Lang LaSalle and Knight Frank from £520,000 to £1, and they range between 38 sq m for a studio and 95 sq m for a two bedroom apartment. Premier apartments will go on sale in May and are likely to be priced between £2m and £5m. The penthouse, which will measure up to 743 sq m, will be released at a later date. The entire scheme will be complete by 2015. The tower is UNStudio’s first major project in the UK. The firm, headed up by Dutch architect Ben van Berkel, is best known for the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Raffles City in Hangzhou and the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam. The tower is designed with a unique curving facade of aluminium and glass that breaks the volume into a series of three-to-five-storey clusters. Each of these clusters are conceived as "individual neighbourhoods in the sky", with balconies and terraces that afford views of the City of London to the south and the basin waterways to the north. Services and facilities will range from what has become the ubiquitous 21st-century luxury residence essential – the hotel style concierge service – to fibre-optic broadband in each apartment. Groveworld are the developers behind the scheme and Orion Capital Managers are sponsor to the fund financing the development.
