Journal des scavans, 1684 reprint. Title page from a reprint of one of the early editions of the French publication 'Journal des scavans'. This journal, the first academic journal published in Europe, was founded in Paris, France, in 1665. Some of the early Paris editions were reprinted in Amsterdam by the publishing house established by Pierre le Grand (1634-1712). This reprint dates from 1684. At centre is the 'Sieur de Hedouville' pseudonym used by the journal's founder Denis de Sallo (1626-1669). At lower centre is a representation of an armillary sphere.
