Alexander Murray Memorial, (Murray's Monument) ,Galloway Forest, near Newton Stewart, Scotland (2019). The striking Murray’s Monument was erected in 1835 in memory of Alexander Murray (1775 - 1813), a local shepherd boy who later became a linguist and Professor of Oriental Languages at Edinburgh University. It stands high on the hillside, allowing magnificent views of the valley and the northern slopes of Cairnsmore of Fleet. He translated Arnold Drackenburg's German lectures on Roman authors as well as other prominent and diverse foreign language works. He died of consumption in Edinburgh.
