Illustration of the US chemist William E Moerner (born 1953). Moerner invented single-molecule spectroscopy, which uses fluorescence to study individual molecules in condensed phases (solid or liquid). Previously this had only been possible in gases. This discovery paved the way for super-resolution fluorescence microscopy. Moerner was awarded a share of the 2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this work, along with Eric Betzig and Stefan Hell.
