The sacrament of Baptismin in the Greek Orthodox Church Is to remove the consequences of 'original sin' and all other sins and to open the door of eternal life to him or her. The first act of the service is done facing west because that is where the sun sets and is regarded by the ancient greeks as the place of Hades. The sponsor is asked 'Do you renounce Satan and all his works'. Then the priest faces East where the sun rises and asks the sponsor 'to accept for Him who is the Light of the World' Then the priest makes the sign of the cross on the child's body. The godparent then says the Nicene Creed and the child is named. Then the candles are lit as a constant reminder for the christian to live and die by the light of Christ. The water is poured over the child's head it is like being buried in a grave, when it emerges it is like rising from the grave, the water is like cleansing. Then the child is annointed with olive oil to elude the grip of sin and the evil one. The the priest says 'The servant of God ......is baptised in the name of the the Father. Amen. And of the Son, Amen. And of the Holy Spirit, Amen.'. Sometimes the sacrament of Chismation is administered immediately following Baptismit is a form of confirmation.
