Oesophageal diverticulitis. Endoscopic view of an inflamed diverticulum (sac-like outpouching) in the wall of the oesophagus (gullet). Diverticula such as this generally cause no symptoms and rarely have to be treated. However, they can become inflamed (diverticulitis), causing pain and tenderness. Most cases of simple, uncomplicated diverticulitis respond to conservative therapy with bowel rest and antibiotics.
