Dayton-Wright Racer. Engineers, owners and employee of the Dayton-Wright Company (formed 1917) standing on the wings of their Dayton-Wright Racer (1920) aircraft. This monoplane, designed by Milton C. Baumann, had solid balsa wood wings. It also had an enclosed cockpit and retractable landing gear. It was a racing airplane (top speed of 306 kilometres per hour), and participated in the 1920 Gordon Bennett Cup air race (flown by Howard Rinehart). It had a wingspan of metres. Three years later, the company, based in Ohio, USA, was closed down by its parent company General Motors. This photograph is from the Bain News Service.
