Dr Martyn Amos, DNA computer researcher. A DNA computer uses DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid, seen behind Amos) to hold data, instead of the silicon bits of conventional computers. DNA encodes hered- itary characteristics and controls the development of every organism. The DNA molecule comprises two strands linked by pairs of bases, represented by the letters C, G, A and T. The sequence of the bases can be used to encode data for calculations. Huge amounts of data can then be simultaneously manipulated by enzymes. For large amounts of data, this is faster than a conventional computer, which works one bit at a time. Amos works at the Univer- sity of Liverpool, England. Photographed in 2001.
