Water wheel and aqueduct. 16th-century illustration of a water wheel being used to power machines, with the machines being used to raise water from a stream into an aqueduct at top. This illustration is from 'Le Diverse et Artificiose Machine' (1588) by Italian engineer Agostino Ramelli (). This work contains nearly 200 designs for devices, many of them water-raising machines including water wheels, pumps, mills, fountains, and wells. This is an example of an encased suction pump.
