The transformers presented the most difficult prob-lem. In order to bring the height and floor space withinthe required limits, forced air cooling had to be pro-vided to supplement the self-cooling properties of theseunits. A small motor-driven fan, housed inside themain cab which also contains the converter and switch-board, supplies the air. This is discharged into a ductsurrounding the lower part of the transformers, wherebaffle plates and guides so direct it that an even distri-. FIG. 4—VIEW OF CONVERTER SECTION. The air is forced fromthe duct up between the corrugations, and although theduct is only 18 in. high at its lowest point, the air iscarried to the top of the transformers. The normalradiation of the cases is thereby increased more than 25per cent permitting a material reduction in the size ofthe tanks. The converter is entirely standard in constructionwith the addition of a leveling device, the function ofwhich is to keep the machine level in case the car isstanding with its floor at an angle. Ventilation is pro-vided by four trapdoors in the roof of the cab, each doorbeing provided with a water-tight removable coverwhich is kept in place during outdoor operation. Whenthe covers are removed, as they are for indoor service, atotal opening of 75 is provided. Holes through =^These Terminals Rem
