Amistad Memorial New Haven CT Ed Hamilton sculptor
In 1839 slaves aboard a slave ship off Cubas revolted and seized control of the two masted ship Amistad. Captured off the coast of New England they were imprisoned at New Haven, Connecticut and eventually tried in a Court. They were represented in an appeal to the US Supreme Court by former President John Quincy Adams and were freed by that Court.
