ML-1 nuclear reactor. The reactor is shown being hoisted onto truck at the door of the test assembly building at Idaho National Engineering Laboratory on May 17th, 1963. ML-1 was an experimental reactor built as part of the US Army Nuclear Power Program. Instead of using a steam turbine, ML-1 used a nitrogen coolant under pressure to drive a closed-cycle gas turbine. The design did not perform well and ML-1 was decommissioned in 1965.
