Skin.—The skin is the seat of retention-cysts of the sebaceousglands and the sweat-glands, the former of which are by far the mostfrequently affected. The sebaceous cysts are also called atheromatouscysts, from the character of their contents. They are found mostfrequently in the scalp, but they may occur in the skin of any partof the body where sebaceous glands are present. As the sebaceousglands are connected with hair-follicles, the retention-cysts frequentlycontain fine lanuginose hair. Comedo represents the smallest sebaceous cyst. The outlet of thegland is obstructed by a minute black mass which completely blocksthe lumen of the duct. If the duct of a comedo becomes com-pletely obliterated by cicatricial contraction, and its contents inspissate,. -?;| 1^ -^^V^-?^f Fig. 475.—Atheromatous cyst of the skin of the cheek ; V 18 (after Karg and Schmorl). Under thenormal epithehum (a) lies a small atheromatous cyst, the wall {b) of which is composed of connective tissuein which can be seen remnants of sebaceous glands flattened by pressure; the cyst is lined by stratifiedlayers of squamous epithelium; the pultaceous contents consist of fat-needles and plates of cholesterin;the cutis is infiltrated ; c, shaft of hair; d, sebaceous gland ; e, sweat-glands. it presents itself under the epidermis as a small white spot, but slightlyelevated, which is called a miliinn. The different forms of acne arecomedos in a state of inflammation. In the deeper forms of sebaceous cysts the cyst-wall is separatedfrom the cutis and the connection with the skin is finally lost (Fig. 475). Astley Cooper first pf)intcd out that sebaceous cysts result fromobstruction. The obstruction is first the result of a
