Gaspard Bauhin (1560-1624), Swiss botanist. Bauhin studied medicine in Italy, France and Germany, before returning to Basel where in 1588 he attained the position of professor of botany and anatomy. His major botany work was 'Pinax theatri botanici' (1596). Those he worked with and under included Girolamo Mercuriale and Pietro Andrea Mattioli. In anatomy, Bauhin's major work was 'Theatrum Anatomicum infinitis locis auctum' (1592). The genus name Bauhinia is named after Bauhin and his brother. This engraving dates from around 1600 to 1605, and is from an appendix to 'Theatrum Anatomicum'.
