Osun Osogbo Monarch: Ataoja in a pensive mood
Ataoja, meaning “the one who drinks water from the fish’s mouth” is the title of the traditional ruler of Osogbo, the custodian of the city, the ceremonial head of Osun, and the chief host of the Osun festival. On the day of the festival, monarchs from near and far, appear in person to honour Osun. Others send representatives or their staff of office as symbols of their presence. Laroye, the first Ataoja of Osogbo, was the founder of the city in 1670. Oba Jimoh Olanipekun Oyetunji, Laroye II has been the Ataoja of Osogboland since 2010.
