Japanese Okimono in the form of a Yamabushi and a Buddhist disciple, 19th century. Made from Ivory. Yamabushi are Japanese mountain hermits seen as mighty warriors with supernatural powers. These monks studied nature, religious/spiritual texts and images, and a variety of martial arts. The artefact shows the pair in movement during a fight. The level of detail shows that it's creator was very skilled.
