Electric lights at night. Historical illustration of elevated electric lights being used at night to illuminate industrial work such as mining and construction. The first carbon arc lights were invented in the early 19th century, but were not in widespread use until the 1880s when the problem of providing a constant electricity supply had been solved. Artwork from 'Electricite' (1911) by Max de Nansouty, part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
