Fatal Poisoning Due to tbe Use of Picric Acid as a Dusting Powder for a Burn. In his well-known work on toxicologythe late Dr. J. Dixon Mann stated: Veryfew cases of picric acid poisoning are re-corded, and none with fatal results. How-ever, since the use of picric acid as an ap-plication to burns become popular, manycases have been recorded in which toxiceffects were produced. The usual applica-tion is a saturated solution (approximatelyone per cent). The symptoms of picricacid poisoning are rapid pulse, papular orerythematous rash, and yellowness of theconjunctiva and skin. There may be vomit-ing and diarrhea. The urine is discoloredand has been variously described as dark-red, dark-green, or port-wine color. Aslong ago as 1903 Mr. A. MacLennon re-ported in the columns of the Lancet twocases in which toxic effects followed theuse of picric acid in burns. In one casethe acid appeared to have played a part inproducing a fatal result. A saturated
