I have often inquiredof myself what great principle or idea itwas that kept this Confederacy so longtogether. It was not the mere matter ofthe separation of the colonies from themotherland, but that sentiment in theDeclaration of Independence which gaveliberty not alone to the people of thiscountry, but hope to all the world, forall future time. It was that which gave. For thou art Freedoms now, and Fames -One of the few, the immortal names That were not born to die. promise that in due time the weightswould be lifted from the shoulders of allmen and that all should have an equalchance. This is the sentiment embodiedin the Declaration of Independence. Now, my friends, can this country besaved on that basis ? If it can, I will con-sider myself one of the happiest men in the world if I can help to save it. If itcannot be saved upon that principle, itwill be truly awful. But if this countrycannot be saved without giving up thatprinciple, I was about to say that I wouldrather be assassinated on this spot thansurrender it. My friends, this is wholly an unpre-pared speech. I did not expect to be calledon to say a word when I came here. Isupposed I was merely todo something toward rais-ing a flag; I may, therefore,have said something indis-creet.
