Mammoth bone huts. Painting depicting an upper palaeolithic (stone age) scene, with a human settlement of mammoth bone huts. Huts such as these have been found at Mezin in the Ukraine. The huts are entirely composed of woolly mammoth bones and covered in mammoth skin. The hut entrance com- prises two upturned skulls with one tusk in each skull forming the entrance arch. Curved rib-bones are seen on the roof. A row of upturned mammoth skulls also forms a fence. These huts afforded protection against mammoths and a harsh climate. Upper palaeolithic was 45,000-10,000 years ago. In the background can be seen a group of mammoths.
