Fig. 50a which I found on the walls of the Arena at Aries, is of course thesame design ; but the 8 figure is in white and formed by the spaces, and thesecond return is 3 units instead of 2. I have given the two drawings of thesame design in order to shew the different effects produced according as theprincipal feature of the design is treated in black or white, as design or also emphasises the point just taken, that this fillet does not produce a genuinemeandering line. These borders have a superficial resemblance to the key -borders ; butthis arises from the affinity between the svaslika and the palcwa. Their originand development shew that they belong to a different order of design, and there-fore cannot be called imperfect keys. One further point in connexion with the svaslika must be noticed.
