View E of holy well (2) below a hill slope on Alderley Edge wooded, red sandstone escarpment, Cheshire. Water from the hillside collects in an oval stone basin in the mouth of an artificial hollow in the outcrop. Water pours from a deep hole and narrow groove in the rocks and overflows from the carved basin via three slots. The area is designated an SSSI for its biological & gelogical interest, and rich in myths & legends, used most notably by writer Alan Garner in his The Weirdstone of Brisingamen series of novels. A National Trust property.
