Although a success, from the start, it changedowners from time to time, until finally acquired by the New^ Eng-land Navigation Company, a holding corporation for the NewYork, New Haven and Hartford Railroad Company; and foryears this magnificent steamboat service has been known as thefamous Fall River Line. In 1876 the Clyde Steamboat Company established a line ofpackets between the cities of Fall River and Philadelphia, princi-pally for freight transportation, which eventually became the 42. KING PIIITJPS ANCIENT RKGAT- THRONE * property of the Winsor Line, that continues the freight trafficbetween Fall River, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Norfolk, Va., andWashington, D. C, with usually (not less than) three sailings aweek. Beside these steamboat lines enumerated The Joy SteamboatCompany of Providence, was started, in competition with theFamous Fall River Line, for local and New York traffic, withwharf and offices at the foot of Central Street. The EnterpriseTransportation Company was also organized by Worcester Cityinterests, in 1905, as another rival line of the Famous Fall RiverLine, for New^ York freight and passenger service, with wharfsand offices at the foot of Turner Street. But these two companieshave since been absorbed by the New England Transportation Company. Beside these we have steamboat connection with Boston, NewBrunswick, and Canadian ports, northward of us. and
