World War I Sinai and Palestine Campaign panel on the Auckland War Memorial Museum in Aukland, New Zealand. The middle east military campaigns and battles listed are: Romani, Bir El Abd, Al Arish, Magdhaba, Rafa, Gaza, Beersheba, Ayun Kara, Khurbet Hadrah, Jerusalem, Jericho, Amman, and Jordan Valley. Almost a third of the 18,166 New Zealanders who died as a result of the First World War have no known graves. Auckland War Memorial Museum was built by a community that needed a place to remember those who died. Tāmaki Paenga Hira, the museum's Māori name, means Auckland's memorial to fallen chiefs and their gathered taonga (treasures).
