A 19th Century illustration of the Ferranti-Thompson dynamo, a generator makes AC electricity (AC Alternating Current) using electromagnetism. When the Zigzag armature invented by Liverpoool born Sebastian de Ferranti (1864-1930) was combined with Sir William Thomson's (Lord Kelvin's) dynamo the machine gave five times the output of any previous machine of it's size.
