Sky Tower cranes in Manchester March, 2014. Carillion 1st Street Development. Number One First Street Colin Spofforth Acrobat skyline sculptures.

One of the five acrobat sculptures of 'Up There' by Colin Spofforth. This 20-acre scheme will extend the heart of Manchester city – and become a new international gateway to the city centre. First Street is set to become one of the most significant development schemes in Manchester City Centre and is already establishing the development as a credible business location following the completion of Number One - a 180,000 sq ft Grade A office building completed in March 2009. It has recently been announced that Jacobs, one of the world's largest and most diverse providers of technical, professional and construction services, has entered into a new 10 year lease agreement to take 23,526 sq ft, and plans to take occupation to fit out in early 2014. The first phase of public realm was completed in summer 2010 which includes five stunning statues positioned down First Street leading into the newly created Southern Square, measuring a huge 2,100 sq m. This project has been part funded by the European Union. First Street North is now under construction the anchor of which is the £25m venue for HOME, a unique multi-art form centre which is being brought forward for the merged Cornerhouse and Library Theatre Company. Also under construction as part of this phase of development is a 208 bedroom four star hotel which will be operated by Melia International Hotels for their Innside brand; a 700 space multi-storey car park; 8-10 food and beverage units and extensive public realm. In addition, the £13m Vita Student development will deliver 279 serviced apartments for use as high quality student accommodation, together with a communal area containing gym, shop and leisure hub.
