Close-up of the mechanical figures on the Carl Frei Dutch street organ on display at the Ramsgate 'Harbour Steam' day. The well-known Carl Frei Dutch street organ 'De Hagenaar' started life as a smaller size organ built by De Vreese of Antwerp, Belgium in the 1920s. It was rebuilt in 1936 by Carl Frei of Breda to the 90 Key size, using some of his latest creations such as Biphone on Melody and Counter Melody. The organ's name means 'from the Hague'. In more recent years this organ was sold to Germany, then on to Canada and the USA, and finally, for now, the UK. Unfortunately all of its changes of ownership now mean that there is a very high price associated with this instrument, added to which the organ's pneumatic and mechanical system badly needs a large amount of money and time spent on it. Despite this it still plays reasonably well in its current location in Preston, Kent, Use this link to listen to this organ playing.
