Dartmouth Lower Ferry Waiting at the Slipway with View of Kingswear, Boats and Buildings across the River Dart: Dartmouth, Devon, England.
Dartmouth Lower Ferry with vehicles, Ferryman and passengers, boarding on the Dartmouth slipway. This colourful image includes details of Kingswears’ hillside buildings, railway station and the waterfront with the passenger ferry. There are two vehicle ferries and a passenger ferry crossing the River Dart in to Dartmouth. This lower ferry runs between Kingswear, which has a busy marina and the terminal station for the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway, and the popular riverside town of Dartmouth The ferry is owned and run by the South Hams District Council. The vehicles are transported on one of two pontoons powered by an attached tug boat, with both running at the busiest of times. The lower ferry tends to be the most convenient, bringing traffic in to the centre of Dartmouth. A steam ferry was brought in to service by 1867 which was powerful enough to convey a horse and cart. In 1920 the Dartmouth and Torbay Railway company sold the ferry rights to the Dartmouth Corporation.
