The Opening- and Picking of cotton should havethe same careful attention as the Carding and Spin-ning, although the latter processes may seem tosome to be more important. Much more attentionis being given to this Department everywhereto-day than formerly, and better equipments ofmachinery are being used. The same equipmentis not equally good for all classes of work, as themachinery must be designed and adjusted for theparticular kind of stock to be used. Unless the cotton is well opened and cleaned, and good even laps are made, the Carding willsuffer, and the Card Clothing will soon be dam-aged, which means poor and costly work. We invite with every confidence all possibleinvestigation into the construction and improveddesign of our Opening and Picking machinery, and the work it is doing in the mills. This entireline of machinery is substantially built, very simple,-and contains many valuable HOPPER BALE OPENER. An investigation of the present methods ofhandling cotton before it reaches the Pickersshows that in a large percentage of mills thereare opportunities for greatly reducing the laborcost and at the same time improving in a markeddegree the quality of opening and mixing. Thesaving which can be effected in labor, and thebetter results obtained by a more thorough openingof the cotton and a more even mixing, can hardlybe appreciated except by those who have seen itdemonstrated by the use of our Hopper BaleOpener. This machine is extensively used in England andon the Continent, where it is giving most satisfactoryresults. It is fillin
