He is dressed in a snuff -brown coatwith high velvet collar, a white lawn stoek, and sits in a red-covered chair with both hands clasped on the edge of a largebook, which rests upon his knees. The head is inclined towardthe left, and the eyes look in the opposite direction. The abun-dant brown hair is of moderate length, and frames a facevivacious in expression, refined and thoughtful in type. Thebackground is a broken tone of warm brown, suggesting oakpaneling, and the light falls from the upper right, stronglyilluminating the head and the hands, and throwing the lowerpart into deep shadow. Height, 30 inckes; width, 25 inchet.
