Theshield shows a plain spade-like outline, manifestly based uponthat of the pseudo-classic urn then so much to the fore. The 232 BOOK-PLATES ornamental accessories are symmetrical palms and sprays,wreaths and ribands. The architectural boss is also an im-portant factor. In many plates, indeed, the shield of arms takesquite a subsidiary position by the side of the predominantlyarchitectural urn. From the beginning of the i gth century, until. The immense majority of examplesdisplay a plain shield of arms with motto on a scroll below, andcrest on a fillet above.
