Voyages of James Cook, 18th century. Map of the world showing the routes and dates of the second and third voyages of British explorer Captain James Cook (1728-1779) in HMS Resolution. The second voyage (red line) took place from 1772 to 1775, charting Antarctic waters and the islands of the southern Pacific. The third voyage (purple line, also in HMS Resolution) took place from 1776 to 1780, and had the aim of finding the North-West Passage through the Canadian Arctic. Cook, after turning back from the Arctic, was killed in Hawaii on 14 February 1779. The voyage home (blue line) ended with the ship blown off course and landing in Sheerness.
