Melusine flies away, 1478. A legendary figure from European folklore, Melusine is usually depicted as a a serpent or fish from the waist down. She was a feminine spirit of sacred springs and rivers. The illustration from Histoire de la belle Melusine is by Jean d'Arras. From the collection of the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris and the artist is unknown.
